As a young boy in San Francisco, I was forbidden from going to the zoo alone on the streetcar. "Too many weirdos," Ma said. Naturally, I went anyway, and naturally I was caught -- many times.

 But those photo expeditions armed with my trusty Brownie Hawkeye box camera -- and whatever punishment I earned, were worth it. They fueled a life long obsession with learning everything I possibly could about the natural world. I hope you enjoy these photographs.
