Roosevelt Elk
Cervus elaphus

These magnificient creatures were photographed from a tram in a wildlife park (Northwest Trek in Washington State).

Although I have often come across elk on my forays into the woods, I have never been able to get this close -- at least on foot.

I'm not sure I'd want to.

I once came upon a herd of cow elk while hiking in a rain forest in Olympic National Park, but they managed to maintain a constant distance from me of about 400 feet.

There is always someone who makes fun of the obvious in the photo shown here. I am certainly not without humor -- in fact, can probably run humor circles around most, but to me, this photo simply has the feel of an old tapestry.
